Non U3A Events, Activities and Information

Bridlington Priory

This year we are celebrating the 900th anniversary of the foundation of Bridlington Priory, and we have a whole summer progamme of activities. These are listed on the website , which has full details of all activities and online booking. Obviously it's some way to come! So I just want to draw your attention to two major events and I should be very grateful if you can publicise these to your members:

The Pilgrimage for All - York to Brid, Aug 22-28

This is open to all, Christian or not. We shall be walking about 10 miles a day, with a celebration on arrival at Bridlington. The pilgrimage commemorates the many pilgrims who came to the Priory to visit the shrine of St John of St John of Bridlington, the last Englishman to be canonised before the Reformation.

Conference: 'Celebrating the Heritage' Sept 14-15

The Conference - taking place on Heritage Open Weekend - presents speakers of national reputation who will be reviewing the rich life and history of the Priory as an institution and inviting discussion with the participants, together with musical illustrations from the Binchois Consort.

The Bowes Museum

The Bowes Museum recently featured in a special edition of BBC2’s The Culture Show, which revealed that a portrait by the renowned Dutch Master, Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) has been discovered in the stores of the Museum. The portrait of Olive Boteler Porter was purchased by The Bowes Museum’s founders, John & Joséphine Bowes in 1866, and after being wonderfully restored, this captivating picture now hangs proudly in the Museum’s magnificent picture galleries- make sure your group is amongst the first to see it.

Other highlights to see this year include a wealth of world-class Fashion exhibitions. Visit the web site for more information:

Tim Walker: Dreamscapes Open now, until 1st September 2013

Laura Ashley, The Romantic Heroine  Opening 21st September 2013 until Sunday 5th January 2014

and A Celebration of Savile Row and Wool Cloth Opening September 21st 2013 until 28th February 2014

Groups will also enjoy our Antiques and Fine Art Fair in October, and of course The Christmas Market in December - both events have a discounted admission rate of just £5 per person.

With group rates held at £7 per person, free guided tours and complimentary use of private dining rooms, The Bowes Museum is an enchanting day out for your group all year round.
