Croquet

Richard Field, Chairman of Bishop Monkton Croquet Club and founder of the U3A Croquet Section, won the Croquet Association's Grassroots Cup in the recent national finals held at Northampton.

Sixteen players from clubs all over England had won their way through club elimination rounds and regional finals to reach this final stage of the competition.

The competition, which lasted almost six hours, involved seven rounds of progressive doubles to identify the top four players to take part in the afternoon semi-finals and final.

Richard led the morning sessions so was one of four to progress to the semi-finals and then the final, both of which he won.

The silver cup was presented to Richard by John Bowcott, who is the Grassroots Tournament Director, and is a member of the Croquet Association's Tournaments Committee.

The Croquet Association is the national body which controls croquet in England.

In another success, U3A Croquet Leader Dawn Hey won the club ladies championship 2011. She beat Lorna Bray in the final. All four semi-finalists were members of the U3A Section of the club that now has 70 members.
