Can I first thank all those members who responded to the letter concerning a possible 20th Anniversary Event? Members will remember that the letter cited two options either a special event tied into the AGM in September or a smaller event linked to the Christmas dinner.
In total 213 members responded by either post or e-mail. This represents about 25% of the total membership. Only 56 members favoured the special event option, some 135 members favoured the link event. A small but significant number either expressed no preference or queried the appropriateness of a 20th Anniversary event, suggesting instead a 25th Anniversary celebration.
What conclusion do we draw from this feedback? Well first it must be said that the vast majority of the membership (over 800 members) chose not to offer a preference. It is clear that many members, for understandable reasons, see their first loyalty to the U3A groups in which they are members. It is often forgotten that Harrogate U3A is part of a national movement. The branch and its membership gain much from that relationship in the form of insurance cover for all groups, access to the Resources Centre and Newsletters.
In the light of this feedback your Committee has decided not to proceed with either of the two options cited in the letter. The Committee is of the view that it would be more appropriate to celebrate the work of Harrogate U3A at a special event in 2016, the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the branch. In taking this decision the Committee is mindful of the very clear message from the membership on this matter.
