The group continues to hold lively and informative meetings.
Our February visit to Sri Lanka had to be postponed until March due to adverse weather conditions!! Once there we visited Kandy, Colombo and the ancient Rock Fortress of Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock), plus the National Parks alive with Elephants, leopards, monkeys, crocodiles and bird life. We learned about the tea plantations, from planting to how the tea is picked and graded.
We stayed closer to home in April visiting Southern Ireland. After learning about the history and the famous writers and poets, we took a leisurely tour ‘taking ‘ in Kerry, Cork, County Clare and Dublin. We also had our appetites whetted by such delights as Boxty, Colcannon, Carrageen Moss pudding, Murphy’s and of course Guinness.
The subject that caused a great deal of mirth was ‘the little people’ including Banshees and Leprechauns along with rainbows and pots of gold.
Our next meeting in June will be a visit to Pateley Bridge.

The group has now been meeting for eight months and the numbers vary from six to ten.
We are enjoying learning and I hope improving, some at a faster rate than others. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a teacher, but with a lot of help from Vera West and Ednie Annett, there is still a nucleus of eager learners. We are sticking to the ethos of the U3A, keeping going by self help. The next meetings are June 12th and July 10th with a break in August, recommencing on September 11th. Two new members started after the new members’ meeting and there is still room for anyone else with any interest especially if willing to teach! For the moment, we are meeting at my house, 6 Valley Mount, but if there is a constant ten or more in the group, we would go back to Community House.
Thank you again for the help of those with previous experience and those who come to the meetings as often as able.

The group has flourished over the past year and has doubled in numbers in less than two years. My last two places being filled at the New Members’ Meeting, making both groups full to capacity.

This section is a sell out!
Forty U3A members will be enjoying croquet this summer.

Earlier this month four groups of applicants attended afternoon sessions at Bishop
Monkton where they were greeted by U3A member and Club Chairman Richard Field.
They were told how the section will operate, with members to take turns as club day leaders and other helping with teas, and will be starting their programme of Monday and Friday club days on May 18 and continuing until early October.
On Friday, June 5 a group of volunteers will attend a special meeting when a U3A Section Committee will elect officers, and start to make plans for the season ahead.
“We have been very impressed by the enthusiasm and talent shown at these sessions and I think this section will have a great future”, said Richard.
All places are now filled, but anyone wishing to go on to a waiting list should contact
