Bridge
The U3A Bridge Group seems to be settling down after the recent changes, and a new £10 annual fee appears to have discouraged the less interested.
The present group membership is about 38 with 21 on the waiting list. Some on the waiting list have refused full membership for various reasons ie grounds of lack of experience and travelling problems. In the latter case it is difficult to understand why someone wishes to remain on the waiting list in these circumstances but this does have a consequential effect. There is continuing concern about the length of the waiting list
so I have decided to have one last go at sorting it out.  I am going to send a letter to all those on the waiting list with the intention of asking them whether or not they would like to start another and separate group.  Present and incumbent group members will assist as far as possible.
One final point is that I will relinquish the “Director” post of the U3A Bridge Group at the end of July this year.  Volunteers should contact me or a colleague to go on the waiting list for the job!

Calligraphy
The calligraphy group has some regular members now and after three meetings we are still coping on a self help basis with two willing helpers. Vera and Ednie  have experience with the art and are enabling us to grasp the essentials, so thanks to them both.
I am still looking for someone who is willing to teach calligraphy on a monthly basis or even when they can manage to attend.
If  you can commit or know of anyone who would be willing, please contact me.

Creative Writing 2
New Members Wanted!
The newly formed Creative Writing Group (2) had their second meeting on Thursday, 15th January, it was a great success. We only have five members at present but all are enthusiastic writers and the group is friendly.
In the future we hope to have the expertise of a Creative Writing Tutor who can join us occasionally.  We also hope to enter competitions, visit literary venues, such as the Ilkley Festival, Feva, and, numbers permitting, have an occasional
away-day in the summer months.  If there are any budding writers or poets out there who would like to join us we would like to hear from you.  We meet on the third Thursday of the month and we do have some homework – not too much, but enough to get the creative juices flowing!  Our aim is to improve and expand our writing abilities but above all to enjoy the process and have fun!
If you are interested please contact me.

Croquet

Good response for croquet

There has been an excellent response from U3A members keen to join the planned new croquet section.

All applicants have received a letter of acknowledgement from Group leader Richard Field who has explained that he will be contacting each of them in the spring and inviting them to attend one of four trial sessions planned for early May. The idea is to enable applicants to be sure they like the game and the amenities before deciding whether they wish to sign up as members. Tuition will be available for beginners.

It is hoped, once the section is set up, it will be possible to form a team and to play one or two friendly matches, including one against Ilkley U3A Croquet Club.
