Keep Fit

Keep Fit.  This term has already started and we are continuing with enthusiasm to try and shed the extra pounds we have gained over Christmas!  Join us if you would like to shed those pounds.  We meet on Tuesday afternoon at Jennyfield Styan Centre at 2pm for an hour of aerobic exercises carefully designed for the older person.  Contact Val Cooke for more information by email to:

Looking at Churches

The Group got off to a good start for 2009 with over 60 members enrolling. An interesting and varied programme is planned for the new year covering all aspects of church-tasting in history, literature and architectural discovery. When the better weather arrives more local field trips will be organized and in the summer a day outing possibly to Southwell Minster near Nottingham. Previous excursions of this type have proved very popular. The influence of the works of the late Sir John Betjeman continue to stimulate our interest in this fascinating subject. Best Wishes to All fellow members for the  New Year !

Naturalists

The January meeting took place indoors and as usual the weather was fine. Last year the weather produced rain for too many of our outings. We used our new venue at the fire station which is a good place to cater for our health and safety. We had a members day with contributions from the floor rather than a speaker. It turned out to be rather botanical with a little ornithology (penguins of Antarctica) but although some members were a little shy of making a contribution it was enjoyed by all those who attended. We hope that the experience will encourage more members to participate in the future. Thank you to all who provided refreshments for our tea break.

The next meeting is ornithological (bird watching) and outdoors, so we are praying for good weather. Meet at the Nosterfield Nature reserve at 11.00 am. We will tour four sites with a break for lunch.

Painting

Facing the complexities of financial turmoil and recession our worthy MPs obviously felt themselves in need of a complete rest.  So they granted themselves a Christmas break of no less than 24 days, secure in the knowledge that the business of government would continue on its frenzied path even in their absence.

The hard-working members of our group were similarly rewarded as our normal programme of painting ended on December 2nd and does not resume until almost the end of January. Admittedly during this time we enjoyed our pre-Christmas Art Game, the cause of much hilarity and scoffing of food, and our New Year Lunch, ditto. Nevertheless brush and paint have not been  applied to paper for an unprecedented period of 49 days. All this was due to the non-availability of our “home” at St Andrews whilst improvements were taking place there.

How will we fare when normal service is resumed? Will the faint, feeble signs of  ability, arrived at by long patience and application, still be there or will it be back to square one to start all over again?  Only time and experience will tell.

However, our jollifications were a great success and we return to face new challenges on January 27th. If you would like to know more about our activities please contact our Group Leader, Peter Kearney.

Philosophy

We go from strength to strength; there are now two Philosophy Groups, both meeting at 2.00pm, one on the third Friday in the month and the other on the third Tuesday in the month. That temporarily absorbed the waiting list, but there is already another member wanting to join us. Watch this space!

The Friday Group started the New Year with a presentation by Janet on Baroness Mary Warnock, interspersed with discussions on some of her controversial views. The next meeting will be an ethical discussion led by John Leigh on the subject of ‘Right and Wrong’ are they natural values?

The Tuesday Group started its existence with a look at the ancient Greeks, their society and philosophical ideas. A lot of those ideas are still discussed today and their thoughts about the composition and values of our surroundings and the universe are not really very far from current scientific thoughts.

We shall continue at our next meeting, by looking at the first major figure, Socrates himself, and then progress to Plato and onwards.
