Armchair Travellers (Barbara Peel)
Pictured are the Armchair Travellers on the Cathedral steps at the start of their ‘day out’ in Ripon. After looking round the Cathedral we made our way to the café in the Spa Gardens. Here we enjoyed an excellent and very reasonably priced lunch. We then visited the Workhouse, the Police & Prison, and the Courthouse Museums. Everyone enjoyed the day greatly. Thanks to Richard for arranging lunch and acting as our ‘guide’ in Ripon.

There has been a review of Membership and of the Waiting List system and all those with an interest have been informed of the outcome.
The review was carried out by several members of the Group and jobs and responsibilities were allocated (as below) in order to share out the essential activities necessary to ensure the smooth running of the Group.
The author will retain overall responsibility assisted by Brian Hudson as Treasurer and playing organiser. Beatrice Cairns will continue to do the final scoring and also maintain an attendance register. Sally Wootton will take on the duty of looking after the waiting list whilst Heather Cormack will continue to collect the attendance fees and also organise the tea break. Pat Hudson will continue to run the social arrangements as before. Naturally all involved at the bridge sessions will still be able to help as required to keep things running smoothly. It is hoped that these changes will be helpful in ensuring the well being of the U3A Bridge Group.
One other piece of news is that a move back to The Convent will not be before 2009 and a further enquiry will be made next January to ascertain if and when a move back can be effected. The present Bilton Cricket Club venue has some technical difficulties but nevertheless has more than proved its usefulness in the circumstances.
The present membership of the Group is 41 Full Members and a waiting list of 18. The recent review however may well alleviate this position but it is still early days.
All enquiries should be made to Jack Duckworth or Brian Hudson.
Bridge, Beginners (Juliet Fabbi)
We have had a very successful year with the Beginners Bridge Group. Our two first year groups are coming along nicely and (with a bit of studying) will all become competent players.
Our wonderful improvers group is almost ready to leave us. Five of our members have already begun promising careers by joining the Victoria Bridge Club. Brian and I would like to thank all our group for all the laughter, fun, games and friendship. We hope that you will forgive us for all our shouting, sarcasm, and evident total belief that you were never going to make it! But make it you have. We raise our glasses to Ann, Harry, Lee, Andrew, Viv, Josie, Rosemary and Eileen. We love you all.
In September we will be recruiting two more beginners groups, so anyone interested please contact us.

For details see under New Groups.
Card Craft (Betty Romaniak)
The group meets on alternate Thursdays between 2 and 4 pm. and continues to flourish.
We have seven regular members and some casual ones. We do anything from “Old cards to new” to, recently, complicated decoupage. All are welcome.
In September it will be time to start making our Christmas card – plenty of choice here including glass painting.

Current Affairs (Brian Elias)
We have been very lucky this year to have had exceptional speakers due to the effort of Maurice Line to persuade them to address us.
We are at the moment putting together next year’s programme, which begins in September. If you are interested in agendas that affect everyone, and in intelligent debate, do come and join us at Robert Street on the first Friday of every month at 2pm.

Family History, Writing (Angela Sansam)
The Family History group is finishing. I will however be offering to lead a new group titled Writing your Family History - for those who wish to get together monthly to motivate ourselves to write up our findings. It will be open to those who have not (yet) done any research.
This group will meet in members' houses, not at the St Robert’s centre. The first meeting will be on Wednesday 1 Oct at 2 pm at my house, Dyke Bottom Cottage, Skipton Road, Killinghall. We will then meet on the first Wednesday each month.
