well, passing the bowling green and swimming baths. Once again the weather was perfect and Steven, as usual, with his passion for Starbeck made it very interesting.
Finally I would like to thank all those who have helped the group this year, especially when I was unable to do anything because of my broken ankle. Without the help of members the group would not be able to function.
My thanks to them all – may we look forward to another successful and happy year next year.

Keep Fit will restart after the summer break on Tuesday, 9th September, at 2pm at the Jennyfield Styan Centre.
We are very fortunate to have found a new instructor to take over from Jane Wood, our instructor for five and a half years, who has set off on a new career. We shall miss you Jane.
Sandra Daltry has spent the last four weeks with us and we look forward to continuing our very successful group much as before. Of course there will be a few changes to our routine and exercises no doubt, but it will be a challenge to all of us and I'm
sure we can rise to it. Anyone interested in joining at the start of the Autumn term should contact Val Cooke.

Looking at Churches (Michael Crosby)
The U3A Looking at Churches Group, now over fifty members strong, has had a successful year with talks, discussions and slide shows presented by the two Group Leaders Michael Crosby and Patrick Bishop.
Afternoon field trips in Spring took us to local churches at Little Ouseburn,Aldwark and Alne. This group of churches ,with their contrasting atmospheres provided excellent examples of most of the architectural styles we have been looking at.
We got much help and a warm welcome from the lay staffs of the churches concerned. Particularly at Alne where, almost miraculously, about forty cups of tea were conjured from one electric kettle to accompany the biscuits we were given.
In mid June we had a day visit to the attractive East Riding market town of Beverley which sports both the largest Parish church in the north of England -the Minster-and its nearby church of St.Mary.Both churches provided a feast of carvings in wood and stone plus beautifully crafted artefacts too numerous to take in on one visit.
Despite an adverse weather forecast for the day,the sun shone for the duration of our all too short visit.
We start the new session for 2008/2009 on Tuesday 7th. October at our usual venue of St.Pauls Church Hall. Enrolments as usual at the Autumn A.G.M.

The Spring and Summer of 2008 has seen us in a whirlwind of activity. This started with a delightful outing to Helmsley, Pickering and Hutton le Hole on a perfect day in May. Our route from Knaresborough to Helmsley took us along narrow, winding roads, unknown to me, and through a string of picturesque villages with extensive views over the Vale of York. Most of the fields we passed were decked out in the intense, fluorescent yellow of ripening rape crops, a colour beyond our ability to capture on paper. Of particular interest on our tour were the amazing 15th Century wall paintings in Pickering Parish Church and the Ryedale Folk Museum at Hutton le Hole.. This is an
