Group News cont’d

The next meeting is at Grassington to study the wildlife in and around Bastow and Grasswood. This is an all day outing and we will be picnicking provided we are lucky with the weather.

Painting (Peter Kearney)
In what has now become a tradition, we launched 2008 by holding our “Christmas Lunch” in January!  The advantages of this are that restaurants are quieter, easier to book and you are not faced with even more turkey and Christmas pudding – a very sensible and civilised idea.
However, not all our time has been frittered away in eating and idle chatter. We faced up to the challenges of demanding subjects such as “Reflections in curved forms”, “Winter moorland” and “Pencil portrait”. The latter had the footnote “Don’t worry if it is not a true likeness”  which was a great relief.
Other subjects have included “Night scene” and the old favourite “Still life using fruit and/or flowers”  but  preferably with some new angle of interpretation.  Our grand finale was the down to earth subject of “Allotments”.  Fortunately there is a large  allotment area right outside St Andrew’s Hall so we didn’t  even need to venture out into the cold and damp to stir the imagination unless we felt so inclined.
We have not been glued to our easels all winter of course.  We have made visits to exhibitions at York and at Ripley, where paintings by our leader Peter were the highlight of the show. To welcome the return of Spring we will be exploring the beauties of Helmsley and Ryedale at the end of April, (but just after the editor’s deadline, so that will have to wait).
If you would like more information about our group you should contact  Peter Kearney .

Reading for Pleasure (Jill Pullman)

Science (John Kendal)
We have had three excellent talks this year. The next one is on Wednesday 21st May and is entitled "Environmental Risks of Breast Cancer" and should be of interest to many members. We usually have 20 to 25 attending each talk but larger numbers when the subject is of wider interest. We are arranging a trip to the Thackray Medical Museum in July and understand that it is an award winning new museum of great interest.

Singing for Pleasure (Vera West )
Following an unfortunate misunderstanding earlier in the year, may I correct the entirely erroneous impression given in an edition of Stray Bits that there is a large number of frustrated singers out there unable to join the group. Despite a recent influx, I am still able to accept 3 more ladies in the Monday morning group; and though ideally the only vacancy in the Wednesday mixed group is for a Tenor, I am always pleased to hear from any men who fancy giving it a try. Clearly the days when we meet will not be convenient for some, but that fact is unavoidable for any group.

Sunday Lunch Club (Rosetta Nicholson)
The Sunday Lunch Group is divided into six groups with an average of twelve members each.  Each Group meets once a month at a local country pub for drinks and Sunday lunch.  Two of the groups are reserved for couples only and one of these groups is seeking some more members.  We are also thinking of establishing a new group for members who do not drive or who want to restrict their venues to in or around Harrogate.  If you are interested please contact Rosetta Nicholson.

Writing - Creative (Trish Gray)
.Recently we have tried the exacting exercise of haiku writing and some of us found it quite addictive.
Two years after Maggie Smith's departure, we still miss her dynamic leadership skills.  Is there anyone out there qualified to take up the challenge?  We meet on the first Monday of every month and there are usually 8 to 10 of us.
