Along side the Duomo is the 4th C Baptistery where we paused to take a closer look at its famous doors, worked in bronze by Ghiberti in the 15th century each of the ten door panels depicting a different scene from the bible.
We visited the Bargello museum on Thursday morning. This was once a medieval prison before becoming a museum and it now houses many interesting sculptures—in particular Donatello's 'David’, which we looked forward to seeing. This very famous bronze of a nude youth wearing a hat had been carefully taken down from its plinth and laid on its side so that careful cleaning could take place. We were fascinated to be able to watch this meticulous process. The restorer appeared to be using a cotton bud dipped in cleaning fluid—no wonder it was estimated to take a whole year! Later we strolled towards the river bank, its peace and tranquillity in contrast to the bustle of the city centre. There we were able to sit in warm sunshine and sketch the scenes of distant bridges, palaces and churches.
All too soon our holiday was nearly over. Time to begin some packing before enjoying a last evening at a favourite restaurant.
Soon Friday morning came and it was time to leave the wonderful, inspirational city of Florence and make our way back to Harrogate. Sadly there had not been enough time to see everything during our stay—I hope my first visit will not be my last.
Many thanks to our group leader Peter Kearney and Brian Graham for super efficient organisation and guidance.
THANK YOU FROM US ALL.

New Members Meeting – 29 October 2007

Were you  there? I was; at the Friends’ Meeting House on 29 October 2007. About fifty new members of Harrogate U3A accepted an invitation to meet each other, the Committee and Group Leaders.
The hall was lined with interesting displays arranged by the Group Leaders who gave us information on the activities of their group.
Within a short space of time our meeting place was a hive of activity as members sought information and asked questions before deciding which groups to join. Luckily we were fortified for the task with excellent tea and biscuits.
Our chairman Janet Coatman gave us a brief explanation of what U3A meant and what were its
aims. Janet also asked us to complete the form “Where do your talents lie?” Have you completed your form yet?
I quickly realised how lucky we are to have such a thriving U3A in Harrogate. This is only possible because of enthusiastic hard work carried out by our Committee and Group Leaders who willingly give up precious time for our benefit – many thanks from us all.
What groups have I joined? Come along and see. I wish there could be more days in the week!
