Photography (Carolyn Watson)
Sheena opened the 26th November meeting by welcoming all the members and in particular two new members, Dorothy Gregory and Val Todd. She thanked the group for their support over her 10/11 years as group leader. She had acted as an "Enabler" trying to get people to explore ideas and experiment. Special thanks were given to Gaynor who had been her ‘right-hand man’. Several members added their own personal feelings and thanks. Gaynor presented Sheena with a card and a small token of appreciation from the entire group.
Our displays at Askham Bryan Regional Day and at our own AGM received many favourable comments.
Sheena handed over the meeting to Carolyn for her to put forward the plans for the future.
Carolyn thanked Sheena and Gaynor for all their hard work over the years. Carolyn introduced Julie Eldridge as Secretary, Pauline Nolan as Treasurer and herself as Group Leader.
A list of suggested Outings and Themes is to be handed out at the next meeting for members to state their preferences. Any other suggestions by members would be welcome. Please add them to the list.
We would be grateful if you could let us have your email address please and also the maker of your Camera.
On ideas for future meetings: Ted was asked if he would like to bring in his collection of cameras to show us, and two people have been contacted,
(1) Roger Mockridge a U3A member from Hull to show and speak on technical matters regarding digital photography and,
(2) The leader of the U3A Photography Group in Sheffield. They are interested in having a competition between our two groups. The theme as yet not decided. They were impressed with our stand at Askham Bryan and felt they could learn a lot from us regarding themes, something they hadn't thought of. We have been invited to Sheffield in order to meet their group and show our photographs. They have a membership of fifty
Julie has contacted the Mercer Gallery and The Pump Room Museum. The Pump Room was the more enthusiastic. Julie needs examples of our work for the January meeting to demonstrate our range and capabilities although it would be 2009 before they could fit us into their programme.
Julie will be enquiring at the Central Library to see if we could exhibit there. Anne Hopkins mentioned that she had been involved in arranging an exhibition at the Library, so if we are accepted perhaps Anne could help us with any necessary arrangements.
The next meeting will be on February 25th 2008 at Community House.
March meeting is yet to be arranged.
An exhibition of our work is to be held at St Peter’s Church in May so please start selecting your best photos for inclusion. We would like at least one from all members.
Reading for Pleasure (Jill Pullman)
Our first meeting of 2008 was held on Thursday January 8th after reading “Atonement” by Ian McEwen. We shared our views about this book, and some discussion about subjects which arose from it promoted a lively exchange of views. Many of us had also seen the film, so we were able to compare the two.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday February 14th, when we will be discussing “Innocent Traitor” by Alison Weir; this is the story of Lady Jane Grey. This book was my choice, so I will be especially interested in hearing the group’s viewpoint... The Classical choice which was chosen by the Group is “The Trumpet Major” by Thomas Hardy which will be discussed at our meeting on Thursday March 13th.
Jill Pullman.

Sketching on Location (Jill Pullman)
In November we met at Margaret’s house, and Peter Kearney came and gave us help with techniques in drawing. We are looking forward to using some of them when we go out to sketch in the New Year.
Our first outing of 2008 took place on Wednesday January 16th, when we went to the Railway Museum in York. Our February meeting will be held at Tony’s house on 20th February, when we will be concentrating on still life. Our meeting on March 19th will take place at the Royal Armouries in Leeds. We have been there on several occasions, and have found it to be challenging, but enjoyable.
There are still only five members in this group and we would welcome anyone who would like to join us. You don’t have to be an expert, and we would welcome anyone who would just like to come along and get a taste of what we do. We are a friendly group, and will make you most welcome.
