Group News cont’d

Sunday Lunch Club (Rosetta Nicholson)

Textile Crafts (Julie Clark)
Our group has now become used to meeting at Harlow Hill Methodist Church and we find the new venue satisfactory.
The highlight of our Autumn programme was the Beading Workshop run by Chris Staniforth who showed us her own lovely work and inspired us to start a necklace. She dealt kindly with our cries for help and we enjoyed the session in spite of finding it hard work.
In the new year we hope to assist, to a small degree, with a national project to creat an underwater vista in aid of Lifeboats. But more of that later. Some new members have joined us and all are welcome, however please ring me first! We meet on fourth Mondays from 2 - 4 p.m..

Theatre Group (Jean Jayne)
We have a new programme for the Spring. Visits have been booked to Leeds Grand to see Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, Harrogate Theatre to see Midsummer Night’s Dream and the International Centre for the Johann Strauss Gala. Further visits are planned for March and April. If you would like further information contact Jean Jayne

Walking (Daphne Fisher)
The Walking Group intended to start 2008 in the right way with a walk on New Year’s Day followed by tea and biscuits at Ivan and Barbara’s house. Alas the weather was rotten so we did not walk but we did enjoy refreshments and a quiz at Westville Oval.
It was fortunate that members could not put me in the stocks again when I cancelled the next walk as it was raining, but more importantly the sodden paths through Hookstone Woods and over Crimple Beck would have been very unpleasant. So twenty four of us travelled instead by bus and car to The Travellers Rest where we enjoyed an excellent New Year lunch. We hope the weather will be kinder for the next walks in 2008.
Plans are in hand for a “Regional Walks Day” on Tuesday 20th May when other U3A groups in the area will be invited to join walks of four, seven or nine miles from Pateley Bridge using parts of the Nidderdale Way. We did something similar based on Fountains Abbey four years ago that was enjoyed by all and gave an opportunity to find out about other U3As’ activities.
I would like to thank our Group Committee, Ivan, Barbara, and Diane for all the help they give and others who volunteer to lead walks. Walking is one of the best ways to keep fit – I think it’s THE BEST.

Writing - Creative (P Gray)
We continue to entertain ourselves with the manner in which we all write so differently and interpret an assignment so diversely.  Recently, the command to write for 10 minutes on the subject of Garden Furniture was received with groans, but everyone enjoyed themselves really!  Having sold all the copies of our anthology, we realised a small profit and were able to send £10 to our chosen local charity.

Yorkshire Explorers (Richard Stobbs)
The Yorkshire Explorers are as the name implies explorers and Yorkshire is where we explore. However we do our explorations on foot after reaching our planned destination by public transport. The distance covered is usually around 10 miles or so. The route is chosen from a map on a month by month basis and on the day we rely on map and compass reading to find our way round. This can sometimes lead to a rather challenging walk due to unexpected natural obstacles and the strange phenomenon of the disappearing footpath (it may have been re-routed or deliberately blocked or may be so underused as to be difficult to trace).
Although we try to keep up a decent pace we do make time to look at things of interest and admire the scenery if only to get a rest!

WANTED! – A CALLIGRAPHY GROUP

I have for a long time wished that I could write in copperplate etc. and wonder if there is anyone who would be willing to teach calligraphy or if there are others out there who would be interested in learning? I have all the equipment but need someone with the expertise and the strength to motivate!!!  Please email  u3a.harrogate@googlemail.com if you have an interest.
