Membership News

Having completed three years as membership Secretary I will be handing over the records, on December 1st, to Barbara Peel who was elected as the new Membership Secretary at the AGM.

During the year ended August 31 2007 233 membership enquiries were received and processed and of these 140 took up membership. Each year we lose a few of our existing members for a variety of reasons and replace them with new members.

When I took over the role in 2004 we had 456 members.  The current round of subscription receipts is nearing completion and I anticipate that by December 1st we will have 590 to 600 paid-up members, the average increase being 45 a year. Concerns over managing a membership of 1000+ seem to be some way in the future but I am sure the committee will find ways of coping with this situation when it arises.

It is pleasing to note that over 40% of our members now have e-mail access, adding considerably to our means of communication.

After refusing a lunch stop when requested by group members, walk leader Daphne Fisher, 35, was frogmarched to Clint and held in the stocks for several hours. One member, 102, who didn’t wish to be identified said, “I think this is a salutary lesson and shows that leaders must respond to the wishes of members. We can’t have them telling us what to do and when.”
Unfortunately as lunch had already been taken there were no squashed tomatoes and rotten eggs available for the traditional fun.
After her release Mrs Fisher, 52, muttered as she walked away, “They will regret this. My next walk includes 72 stiles and an acre of mud.” One unidentified member was heard to remark, “So what’s new?”

Useful Information and Tips
Hello, how is your hearing?  Pardon?  I said how is your hearing?  If you are not sure, why don’t you check it out.  It is so simple.  All you need to do is pick up the phone and dial 0845 600 5555 and you will hear the friendly voice of TV presenter, Eamonn Holmes.  He will take you step by step through all that you need to do.  Just listen carefully – the whole thing takes about five minutes and you will get an assessment at the end of the test.  It is that simple.  You never need say pardon again.
Do you know the number of your mobile, assuming you have one?  You would be surprised how many people don’t know their number.  To make an emergency call from your mobile instead of dialling the usual 999 you dial 112 and this will connect you with your local emergency operator.   If you found it difficult to describe exactly where you were, say if you were out walking or away from home and the car broke down, you simply tell the operator the number of your mobile and she will be able to pinpoint exactly where you are.
