Dangers of Halogen Lighting
Some older models of domestic halogen standard lamps can overheat.
We had a floor standing low voltage halogen lamp having a central chrome pillar with surrounding spiral that together formed the conductors to which the halogen bulbs were secured with grub screws.
On two occasions I found the pillars and lamps had become excessively hot. In fact so hot that plastic and metal had melted.
This overheating was caused by loosened grub screw connections presumably creating increased resistance and consequential overheating. Please check yours. I don’t think this model is now available.
The Editor
Tribute to Maurice Line
To most people Maurice may not look like a Knight in Shining armour, but when Maggie Smith stood down as Editor of the Stray News, I as chairman, was faced with finding somebody to take on the role. After striving for quite some time to find that person, from our nearly 500 members, when Maurice offered to assume the office to me he looked like the proverbial Knight In Shining Armour coming to rescue the maiden called Stray News (Not a straying new maiden I hasten to add). So thank you Maurice for your effort over the past two years. You have kept our maiden alive and kicking.
Now our best wishes to the new knight ; Chris Rush.
Dominoes Puzzle
Unfortunately Terry Collins puzzle was again printed with a missing digit. The correct version is I hope now printed below. The solution is on page 11
Arrange a set of dominoes so that they create this pattern of digits (with 0 denoting the blank)
Hint: Start by working out where some of the doubles go.

Science Group – seeking a Chairman.
This long running and successful group is run by a small committee which, since Adrian Walmsley’s accident, is seeking a new Chairman to take on the role as soon as possible.
The programme is set for the rest of the academic year, but a contribution for the Regional Open Day at Askham Bryan on August 23rd and for the Harrogate U3A AGM on September 21st needs to be organised and next year’s activities planned.
This is an appeal for help from current members of the Science Group, and anyone else who is interested in the group’s activities.
Without the active involvement of members in the running of the group it can not exist. It is sincerely hoped that it does not come to this.
If you are able to help in any way please contact Janet Coatman, Chairman of Harrogate U3A by e-mail at u3a.harrogate@googlemail.com urgently.
J. Coatman.
Card Craft - New Group
A new group entitled Card Craft will commence on 3 May.
The group will meet on alternate Thursdays from 2pm to 4pm at my house.
Email u3a.harrogate@googlemail.com for my attention.

Learning Bridge - New Class
In the coming September we are hoping to form a new group of beginners, and people with some experience can ask to join our improvers group depending on the availability of places.
We can honestly say that a good time is had by all as the learning process is offset by laughter that we generate together. Enquiries to me through Harrogate U3A at u3a.harrogate@googlemail.com
