discussion, again on a mainly female subject. We meet in the afternoon, on the third Friday of the month and are a small and friendly group. Our methods are a presentation, followed by a general discussion. There is no pressure on anyone to contribute, but contributions are welcome, as are new members.

It was with sadness that we learnt of the death in April of the group leader Frances Thomason. Frances had been ill for some time but continued to support the group for as long as she was able. Until last AGM she was also on the U3A committee as Group Coordinator. The play reading group is not restricted to U3A members having started as an initiative by Harrogate theatre. U3A was hoping to start such a group so Frances agreed to act as the liaison between participants and the theatre.
Jill Pullman has agreed to be the contact for the group for the time being. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the foyer of Harrogate theatre at 2.30pm

The group is still quietly thriving and meeting once a fortnight. Our numbers keep fairly steady at about sixteen and we are very happy with that level, as we all like to have a turn at reading poetry.
We read a wide variety of poetry ranging from that by famous well-known poets to that by lesser-known poets, including some by modern poets. We also find out what we can of their lives and discuss the effect of their experiences on their work.
We all contribute to our meetings and learn from one another.

This group has enjoyed another successful year. There are now 15 members, but we still have room for anyone else who would like to join this active and friendly group.
Our next meeting in the refurbished room at St.Luke’s Church Centre in Franklin Square is on Thursday May 10th when we will be reviewing , “Case Histories” by Kate Atkinson. On June 14th the book will be “Heat Wave” by Penelope Lively. We do not meet in July or August. We meet again on September 13th, which is our planning meeting. The group meet to decide our programme for 2007/8. Our meetings start at 10.15am and finish at 12.00 noon.
This month, Professor Jack Meadows, Astronomer, gave a very fascinating talk on the future of the sun, then the earth, and finally the universe. As could be expected, this was followed by many questions and much discussion – also a yearning to learn more, which is what the U3A is all about.
The programme for the next few months is as follows:
May 16th Martin Curzon, Paediatric Dentist : ‘Trace Elements in Oral Health’.
June 20th John Ryder, ‘Electricity from the Victorian Age to the Present Day’.
Sept. 19th Terry Collins, ‘Events from the History of Science’.
Oct. 17th Gaynor Smith, ‘Confessions of a Climatologist’.
We hope to pay a return visit to the Central Science Laboratories, York, in July. Details later.
Anyone is very welcome to come along. We meet in the St. Robert’s Centre on the third Wednesday of each month at 2.00pm. Members pay £10 for a series of five meetings – alternatively, £3 for each individual talk.

Scrabble – Joan Murphy
Singing for Pleasure – Vera West
This is a small and friendly group, and at the moment there are only five regular members. We go out to various locations, armed with paper, pencil, and any other preferred art materials.
I am hoping to arrange some tuition at some of our sessions during next year.
We travel mainly by bus, arriving at our destination in time to have a coffee or some lunch before setting off to sketch. We then meet for a cup of tea before travelling home.
On Wednesday, May 16th we are going to Ripley Castle Gardens and on June 20th to Unity Allotments, and finish our year at Harewood House and grounds on July 18th.
Out September meeting takes place at the café in Ripley Castle where we plan our programme to the following year.
We welcome new members.

The Harrogate U3A Sunday Lunch Group is now in its fourth year and thriving. Established to cater largely for those living alone or new to the area who may be at a loose end on Sundays, it has now grown to over 70 members. Members are currently divided into six groups, reserved for either singles or couples. Two of the groups were successfully launched this year – one for singles and one for couples. Each group meets once a month at a
