A question was asked at the AGM as to whether we should encourage the establishment of another U3A in, for example, Ripon, Knaresborough or Wetherby.
The Chairman’s Response.
It is not the responsibility of Harrogate U3A to set up other U3As. If members living in surrounding towns wish to start their own U3A they should contact National Office for guidance. Mike Long is the development officer. The Ridings Region Support Group would also be able to offer advice as would the officers of Harrogate U3A. However we must be careful not to affect adversely Harrogate U3A.
The real issue is one of managing a growing membership which can result in groups having waiting lists and difficulty in finding venues. If a group is too large its members should consider the possibility of starting a new group which may, if appropriate, meet outside Harrogate.

Just two more Open Meetings to go and the season will be over for another year. Our 25 May meeting is a talk by a lady with a wealth of experience in adjudicating at musical festivals and on 22 June the meeting is an illustrated talk on the history of Harewood House. On the subject of the talks, I have now completed the programme for the 2007-2008 season and have tried to pick subjects that will be of interest to all. McMillan Cancer Relief should have come to our April meeting but owing to a double booking were unable to attend. They are now booked to come in June 2008. In the meantime I was able to secure the services of a retired Pharmacist at the eleventh hour and was very grateful to him for coming to the rescue.
