Group News cont’d

pre-selected pub venue, usually located in villages around Harrogate with most groups including venues further afield in the summer months. The choice of venues is based on such criteria as the quality and selection of the menu, ambience and, where possible, a picturesque location and scenic route in the summer.  We try to include a choice of pubs throughout the year, ranging from traditional pubs to gastro, in order to suit all price brackets.
Our venues list is regularly updated to include any new recommendations made to us by members, as well as those that I and Liz Craddock ‘sample’ on behalf of members before adding them to our list.  A firm favourite now has to be The Abbey Inn at Wass near Byland Abbey ruins which fits all our criteria for a perfect summer Sunday venue.  Another gastro pub in the same league is The Durham Ox at Crayke – very popular with Ampleforth parents so groups have to make sure any booking does not clash with a school event at Ampleforth – and a new addition this year, the Royal Oak at Staveley, a traditional, family-run pub which offers an imaginative menu as well as a variety of traditional favourites at reasonable prices.  For mid-week lunchers it also offers a senior citizens’ set menu for £7, but remember that it is closed on Monday.

Theatre
We have made two visits to the recently refurbished Grand Theatre in Leeds, using our bus passes to attend the matinees. First, we saw The Northern Ballet’s production of Sleeping Beauty. This was a very modern version, but those attending found it very enjoyable.
The following week some of us returned to see High Society. For those who had seen the film it brought back memories of Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.
We will be returning to future productions and have already booked seats for The Nutcracker in December.
New  members interested in joining can get further details.

Holidays
Have any of you tried a holiday arranged by U3A National Travel?
I usually travel on my own and thought the trip down the Nile with a friendly group of people of similar age sounded good. It all went smoothly apart from the fact that when I was travelling on the train to Gatwick, I discovered that my bum bag with money, tickets and passport was still in my cousin’s house in Redhill! Fortunately an early start meant that I had time to return and retrieve it before checking in at the airport.
It was a super holiday, packed full of wonderful sightseeing from Luxor to Abu Simbel, always returning to our comfortable boat each evening.
I have just written to Dawn Zeffert (one of the organisers) for particulars of a holiday to Crete in April 2008.
Would anyone care to join me?
